What Does A Year of Plugging In Look Like at BBC?

The list below gives you an idea of what a year-in-the-life of BBC looks like. Though it represents a lot of what we do, it does not cover everything (especially youth and children events!). For current events, click here to view the current calendar. Monthly gatherings for women, men, and senior adults also happen, but are not reflected below.

January

  • Sweater Weather Sunday Nights - Church Wide Events like game-nights, meals, and movies! Sunday nights in January.
  • Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service - We get out of the building and into the community to commemorate Dr. King's legacy of service.
  • Founder's Day - On the Sunday closest to January 24 (our founding day in 1887), we celebrate with a special worship service.

February

March

  • Ash Wednesday Service - Marking the beginning of the Season of Lent
  • Church-Wide Spiritual Formation Retreat at Caswell - All ages at BBC gather together for a weekend of fun, worship, small groups, and more–– at the beach! 
  • Lenten Activities - Stations of the Cross, prayer services, etc. as we journey toward Easter together.

April

  • Children's Ministry Easter Egg Hunt
  • Palm Sunday - Marking Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem at the start of Holy Week.
  • Holy Week Activities - We host a few events to help you orient your heart toward the fullness of Easter.
  • Maundy Thursday Service - A combination of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, we reflect on Jesus' last supper, arrest, and death.
  • Easter Sunday - We celebrate the resurrection of Jesus together in both worship services.

May

  • Spring Sunday Night Community and Meals End - We take a sabbath over the summer.
  • Youth Sunday - Our teenagers lead us in both worship services.
  • Youth Ministry Junior/Senior Night - The Juniors and Seniors get out of Benson for a few activities to celebrate the end of the school year.
  • Fifth Grade Celebration - The youth celebrate the transition of rising sixth graders to the youth group.
  • Graduate Sunday - We celebrate our graduating preschool, high school, college and post-college graduates in worship.
  • Family Fun Day - We kick off summer with a church-wide pig pickin', games, and more.

Summer

  • Junity Sunday School - All of our adult classes gather together in one class as guest teachers lead.
  • Wednesdays - Lunch on the Lawn - A partnership ministry of BBC serving lunch to kids at Vyas Park.
  • Youth Camp - The teenagers head somewhere for a week of worship, Bible study, games, and more.
  • Youth Mission Trip - The teenagers serve outside of Benson together.
  • Youth Mission Possible Luncheons - The youth gather to serve locally and eat together a few times throughout the summer.
  • Vacation Bible School - Kids are invited to come and learn more about faith while having fun through stories, games, music, crafts, and more!
  • Children's Sunday - Following VBS, our kids lead us in worship!
  • University Commissioning - We pray for, and commission, our college students to head to their campuses.

August

  • Move-In Day Help at Campbell University - We help students move in at the University 11 miles down the road!
  • Back to School Bash - We celebrate the end of the summer with a church-wide meal and activities.
  • Blessing of the Backpacks - Our annual service where we pray for our children, teenagers, parents, teachers, and staff heading back to school.
  • Drama and Arts Sunday - A Sunday of skits, music, art, and more as we worship our creative Creator together.

September

  • Sunday Night Community Groups & Meals Kick-Off - More info
  • Youth Fall Retreat - The teenagers head to the beach to reflect and grow together in faith.
  • Deacon Elections - We elect our lay leadership for the next three years with three new members added to our Diaconate as three others rotate off.

October

  • Blessing of the Pets Service - A special service (held on a Saturday) to recognize our pet family members and their status as created by our Creator.
  • World Communion Sunday - Celebrating at the Lord's Table with Christians from across the world on the same day.
  • Deacon Ordination/Installation - The services where we install/ordain new lay leaders in our congregational life.
  • Homecoming - A service and meal of celebration where we invite all to come 'home' to BBC no matter where they are no living.
  • Fall Festival/Trunk-or-Treat & Lighthouse Parade - A chance to come together, dressed in your best costume, and enjoy time together as kids get candy and adults decorate their cars. Other activities include games, music, snacks, and our annual lighthouse parade around the town of Benson.

November

  • Spring Sunday Night Community and Meals End - We take a sabbath over the Advent/Christmas.
  • All Saints Day Worship - We remember those we've lost to death over the last year in our worship services. 
  • Church-Wide Thanksgiving Meal - We celebrate and give thanks together.
  • Hanging of the Green - We reflect on the beginning of the Advent season through our decorations.

December

  • Youth and Children's Christmas Program - Our Youth and Children lead us in a special music and drama program related to the season.
  • Christmas Cantata - Our Chancel Choir leads us in special Advent-related music and themes.
  • Christmas Caroling - BBCers of all ages head out in the community to carol at the homes of our homebound members.
  • Blue Christmas Service - A special service where we recognize the difficulty of the holiday season for those who have lost loved ones or experienced pain at the holidays.
  • Christmas Eve Services - We host two services: an earlier service that is more contemporary and family-focused (complete with Christmas cookie decorating), and a later traditional service of lessons and carols.
